PARENTS INFO SHEET

Dear Parents,

P.A.R.T.Y..... Prevent Alcohol and Risk Related Trauma in Youth... is facilitated by the Prince George Safe Attitudes & Actions Society. As a group of mainly volunteers, we have been presenting the program since 1997.

This program is held at the University Hospital of Northern BC and runs from 9:00 a.m. until 2:30 p.m. every Thursday during the school year. Students will hear presentations from the RCMP, physicians, paramedics, nurses, injury survivors and other dedicated volunteers. There are tours of the Emergency Department, the Morgue, the Intensive Care Unit and the Chapel, with a presentation in each area.

This is a jam-packed day and for most students, the hospital is a very foreign environment. We highly recommend that each teenager eats breakfast on P.A.R.T.Y. day and, as well, brings a nutritional lunch. This helps to prevent fainting and/or injury due to low blood sugar combined with overwhelming information. Please note that there is no microwave or refrigerator available.

Students will see graphic real-life slides in some presentations, but please be assured that what they see is no more graphic than what they view on television. We are presenting real consequences of driving while drunk or fatigued, texting, talking on cell phones and/or not wearing a seatbelt. Presenters also address other risky behaviors like not wearing a helmet, getting into a car with a drunk driver, smoking and doing drugs. Students will meet and interact with people who have suffered from the consequences of risk taking, a very eye-opening experience!

Any feedback from parents shall be very much appreciated. We provide the opportunity for the students to comment at the completion of the program. An evaluation of your teen's experience will also add valuable critique to the P.A.R.T.Y. Program.

The Prince George Safe Attitudes & Actions Society is a non-profit organization. Donations are very welcomed and are tax deductible. If you desire to support the program, please make your cheque payable to the Prince George Safe Attitudes & Actions Society. An income tax receipt will be issued immediately.
